Happy Monday! Some schools are out and others are following this week. The end of this school year is unlike any other. Schools, teachers, and families have become creative with moving up and graduation parades, reverse parades, virtual ceremonies, individual visits, and more. It has shown me the great capacity for creativity and flexibility in our communities and school and I am optimistic we will find a way forward to whatever school looks like this fall together.
In our home, we are done school but that doesn't mean learning ends. When I was a kid we choose a topic to learn about during the summer, and I have continued the tradition with my own kids. My kids call their "summer study" but it is really just a fun way to keep them engage and learning in the summer. They choose a topic and we make it a point to find books, magazines, shows, movies, and usually field trips (this year they may be more virtual than not) to help keep their brains engaged while school is out. This summer we will be learning about live-action movie-making, unicorns and mermaids, and carbs - yup you read that right, my 6-year-old wants to learn about carbohydrates. Then he decided to add fats to it as well. Little does he know he's in for a summer of learning all about food and nutrition! I'll keep you updated on Facebook, and Instagram on how that's going.
This week's newsletter has all of the information on which playgrounds in the area have re-opened with new rules and policies for use linked when we could find them. It also shares ways to celebrate Juneteenth, a day that I admit I hadn't learned about until recently but will be celebrating with my children this year as we work toward understanding the history of BIPOC in our country and move as a family from being not racist to actively anti-racist. Our new Black-Owned Business Guide will also be live on our site later this week in the Guides Section for those who are looking to support Black-Owned businesses in our area.
I hope you are all well and have a great week!
