Low Cost Adventuring with South Shore Quests

South Shore Quests makes it easy to explore the South Shore!

By Laurie Corbett, Co-Publisher, Macaroni Kid Weymouth July 15, 2019

One thing my kids are always up for is a good adventure, but sometimes adventures are exhausting to plan, pay for and execute as a parent. A few years ago I learned about South Shore Quests and have been sharing information on them over on our sister site Macaroni Kid South Shore Boston. But I confess I hadn't taken the time to seek out a quest book until this summer and that was a big mistake. We grabbed our book at Mass Audubon's North River Sanctuary this spring, but they are also available at the New England Wildlife Center in Weymouth, the Hingham Public Library, the South Shore Natural Science Center in Norwell, Holly Hill Farm and Buttonwood Books in Cohasset, and the Ventress Memorial Library in Marshfield - for just $5 each. Plus, there are 4 FREE quests available on their website which are perfect for trying out questing to see if it is right for your family.

South Shore Quests are a combination of hiking, treasure hunting and exploring all in one. We recently did Up and Over Great Esker at Great Esker Park in Weymouth with my parents. YES, questing can be multi-generational! The kids loved checking out a new park and trying to figure out the clues, and I loved that it had them working together toward a common goal. The views were beautiful, we explored somewhere we might not have gone, and we found a great swing - my kids love swings.

When we returned home we shared our fun on social media and inspired another family to try questing. They did one Webb Park is not an Island at Webb Memorial State Park in Weymouth recently and said "Thank you again for recommending this!  It was awesome!  Can’t wait for the next one." and shared some of the photos of their adventure with us for this article.

This past week we decided to try Beeline to Babbling Brook at the Braintree Town Forest in Braintree with my niece. It was her first time doing a quest and when I asked her about it later she replied, "it was tremendous!" 😆 It was a fun quest, and the town forest has a number of informational signs that share history of the forest and Braintree making it an adventure and history lesson in one. It was also a good chance to do some reading, and writing this summer without the kids realizing it.

This summer there are quests in Braintree and Weymouth, along with Quincy in nearby Macaroni Kid Dorchester's area and Cohasset, Duxbury, Hingham, Norwell, and Scituate in Macaroni Kid South Shore Boston's area. The South Shore Quests season runs from April 15 to November 15th and this season there are 15 quests in the book plus Abigail Adams Park & House Rock Park is open year-round. You can also check their website for trail updates all season long. Thinking of heading out to try a South Shore Quest? Use #MacKidWeymouth on social media so we can see your family fun too!
